Entry 4 :The light side of life with having a disability

10/13/18  The light side of life with having a disability

I thought today I would share with you the lighter side of living with a disability

Sometimes people take life to seriously. It is okay to laugh at your self and see things at times in a different light.

I would like to share a few stories with you.

First of all, I wanted to share with you that I not only go to GCC but I also work at a grocery store too. I have been working there for 5 yrs. Eventually, I would like to work with children with special needs like me. For now I embrace the job I have. I am well known and liked. I even run into customers quite often. When I first started there, it didn't take them long to realize that I was not only good with numbers but had memorized all the codes for produce. Well, it didn't take long for the cashiers and managers to catch on, and before I knew it, I was now known as the "code girl".

It is quite common for a cashier to call out my name while holding up produce and me calling out numbers. I guess it is easier for them than to look it up. So yes, it is quite often when I am working to hear KAYLEY  then I look up and holler 4011, OH NO WAIT  are those plantains? That would be 4235. Before I know it another cashier is calling out my name and I holler back, kiwis are 4030.

So as you can see my strength is in numbers.

But, if you were to ask me, at this moment where my hairbrush is, my name tag and yes, even where I put my cell phone, ummm I couldn't tell you. I am still trying to figure out where I put my shoes. Oh and a side note - good thing we have a landline, cuz I call myself a lot. But, if you want to know the code for dragon fruit, I got this. The different varieties of apples, I know this too. If you want to know what apples are good for such things as making applesauce or for baking and so on, then ummm no, I don't got this.
I can tell you though what isle the applesauce is in or where to go for bake goods or even how much an apple pie cost.

So, when it comes to numbers, I got this.

Here is another little story for you. My mom and I like to sit down and watch our shows together. We often set shows up to be taped. Now, my mom has this tendency to forget what shows come on or what days, the channel or time. I would tell my mom to write it down but, it doesn't help if she doesn't remember where she put the paper. Can't help you there mom, I am still trying to figure out where I put my shoes.
Are you starting to see where I get some of my forgetfulness from.😃
That's okay mom, I got this. Say Yes to the Dress comes on Friday's, channel 42 at 7:00. The Voice, Mon. and Tues. channel 12 at 7-9:00. Yes I do know when So You Think You Can Dance, 90 Day Fiancé and Long Lost Family comes on too.

Once again, if it is involving numbers, I got this.

One other thing that I wanted to share with you is that I might be good with numbers, but due to my disability I am known for being a bit slow. Yes, slow in the thinking process and no, I still don't know where my shoes are. Also, I am a bit slow in movement, getting from point A to point B. I look at it this way, turtles are slow, but hey their kind of cute. Sloths are slow, but you have to admit, their cool looking. Then there are snails and yes, they are slow but, not given enough credit.

A turtle with a banana, ho ho ho

How cool is this!

Snail pace, it is slow but is it getting the job done

The other day I was sitting on the back porch. With all the rain we have had, we now have snails. I was observing one in particular. I went inside, came back out about 5 minutes later. The snail that I was checking out was now half way up the wall. I was amazed how far it traveled in such a short period of time. I am here to tell you snails are not as slow as you think.

So, the point of my blog is, we may not be smart in all things, but we do have strengths in certain areas and we need to embrace that. Also, not take ourselves too seriously and be able to find a little humor in things.

Oh, and a fun fact that you might not know is, produce codes are universal.
Just in case you might be wondering, yes I did finally find my shoes, until the next time. 😉

Remember we are unique, different and special in our own unique way, I love you all, see you next time💚💚💚💚

  1. I liked your perspective and personality in this post. However, the text that goes outside onto the purple border on the right is very challenging to read.
